Default How Did You Come Up With Your Dog's Name(s)?
I apologize if this thread has been done before, but I was bored and thought it would be fun!!

My fiance and I always have such a hard time coming up with names for our pets!! We had Harley for about 2 weeks before we named him. We could never agree on anything! Finally I gave my fiance a list of names and told him he HAD to pick one....so he picked Harley!

Ginger was fairly easy to name, due to her color. Not sure if she is purebred, but she probably isn't as she was a stray, but she is a beautiful deep red color, a lot of people ask if she is OFRN.

Repo was a rescue, and the name kind of fit since we kind of repossessed him from the shelter...not really, more like stole...but no need to get technical! (Repo passed away last week, btw. The vet thinks he had some neurological issues as he could not keep his body temp up. )

We had trouble naming Keela. My fiance wanted to name her after some type of alcohol! So, I came up with Keela, which is short for tequila. I told him that was the only way I was going to have a dog named after alcohol.

How did y'all come up with your dog's names?

Brennan was already named when we got him, but I keep meaning to ask his previous fam where his name came from. I could have easily changed it, but I think it suits him and it reminds me of the show Bones .

Our other dog, Lily, is actually named "TigerLily Princess" and she's named after the indian princess in Peter Pan (or at least the TigerLily part is!)

I love naming new dogs though. I was on a kick where I named every pet we took in after Disney characters for a looong time.

I hate trying to name them!!

Keela was named Khloe by the breeder, it just didn't seem to fit her.

Sasha Princess.

I had planned to name a husky "Sasha" and even when we got Sasha I wasn't going to name her that. I was thinking of naming her Ziva. Anyways as soon as I picked her up I said something along the lines "You're perfect Sasha" and she has been Sasha ever since. Ironic since the name Sasha means "defender of men" and she is a total wuss.
The Princess part of her name was in honor of the dog I had as a teenager. Her name was Princess.

The dogs tell us their name!
Or really the name just comes to us.
My husband mostly does the naming. We just had a little, old toy fox terrier come into rescue. They called him "dinkus". My old Greman Great grandmother used the word to mean idiot or ass wipe. I'm sure as hell won't be calling some sweet old dog ass wipe in Greman!
So I showed him to my Husband and said "What's his name" and he said "Larry!" And he's been Larry ever since and loving it!

lest see...I have had a lot of dogs in my life, I forget how our family dogs got named.. I was like 2 when we got them...anyhow other than them, I had...

Bruno which I rescued from a shelter (my ex made me put him down...long story makes me sad but yea I miss him every day) he was an Am. Bully mutt...I just came up with the name, it just fit him so well

Bear was a chi/pub mix pup I had for a little bit, he was from my ex...I ended up giving him to one of my ex's co-workers because he kept walking under my feet and I was not to attached to him (don't really like little dogs) he ended up getting hit by a car last year

Spike was a blue tick hound pup I rescued, he had a fungle infection, his face had a wedge of white like a spike so it kinda just fit, I ended up having to give him to a the humain society because his bills were getting to much for me to handle (the infection was not clearing up and my ex mysteriously never had money even though he worked about 30-40 hours a week and did not pay for anything but gas...) anyhow he did get adopted after they cleared him up, he was on the right track when I gave him to them but just needed more than I could give

Lola was a GSD/apbt I rescued and placed into a wonderful home, she was a hard name, solid black, looked pure GSD but I met her dad (it was a "free" pup in a bad situation type rescue) well anyhow I ended up having a friend name her, she ended up having her name changed to Echo by her new owners and she is doing fantastic

Dakota a puppy I wish I still had (she got out when my idiot Ex. refused to listen to me and to chain his stupid escape artist dog...long story short she went MIA he got hit by a car and was disabled, finally had the ex put him down after 2 years of suffering) she was a lab/bully breed mix black with a bit of white on her and I just always thought of the "black hills of Dakota" when I looked at her, I miss her so much, I hope she is alive and well but if not then she is free at the bridge...

Then I have Goren...my heart dog! He was from a rescue and originally named Toe by the rescue, I got him at 14 or so weeks old, he was hard to name, my Ex. did not like the name I gave him and kept trying to talk me out of it...but I love Law and order CI and Love Vincent D'Onofrio but I do not like the name Vincent for a dog and D'Onofrio is just to hard to say so I went with Goren as in Bobby Goren his character on the show

Logan was hard to name kinda, he was from an oops litter and on the way home (a 2 hour drive) my hubby and I were throwing names, he was almost named Cricket but after a few days we settled on Logan, after we picked it we realized the other male on Law and order CI was named Mike Logan so it just really fit into place haha.

I'm terrible at naming my animals. I always want them to be perfect.

When I got Gypsy (RIP), I didn't plan on keeping her, so I wasn't really concerned about a name. I decided to call her "Gypsy" after my Granny's little old rat terrier, Gypsy Rose Lee. It stuck, and it actually was perfect for her. We were very nomadic in my younger days!

Mexico, again, I didn't plan on keeping when I found her. I tried very hard to find a rescue to take her but most came back with replies of "She would be destroyed due to her temperment," so I ended up just keeping her. I named her Mexico since she was found in New Mexico, just a half-feral rez dog. Now almost six years later, she's a great dog and Mexi suits!

With Umah, it did take me a while to settle on a name. I wanted something german, abrupt, and with meaning. I had a hard time choosing between Rena (which means "Queen") and Umah (which means "Tranquility"). She still hasn't grown into her name, as she is the LEAST tranquil dog I've ever know, lmao, but I'm happy with it and always have been!

Marsha, Marsha, Marsha. When I saw her at the animal control for the first time, she was dirty and had a very unhealthy coat, and her colors were like that of a toasted marshmellow. White on the bottom, and golden tan on the top. I could NOT bring myself to name her Marshmellow, so I shortened it to Marsha. I've loved her name from the start!

Now with Zora, her name just came to me. I wasn't sure what I was going to name her, and then it just popped into my head. I didn't know the meaning of it but one of my forum friends told me it means "The Dawn", which was very appropriate for the situation I adopted her under.

And Miss Kitty. I had a hell of a time choosing a name for her! Olive, Oasis, Pinky.....then finally I settled on Miss Kitty. I think it took me almost two weeks to finally choose a name, lol! Sometimes I still wish I would have gone with Oasis, but I think it was too much of a mouthful for her. Kitty is sharp, and simple.

Rowdy ~ Came to me already named. The name fit so I kept it. Rest in Peace buddy boy ~~~

Sugar ~ Her foster called her Snowball and Sugar. I liked Sugar and she REALLY is a sweetheart. My dear mother told me it wasn't right for a grown man to call HIS DOG "Sugar" ... she got over it.

Mason ~ He's Colby bred and the Colby's seemed to name most all of their dogs human names. Who am I to break tradition? The breeders name is Mason and I once knew a guy named Mason that was an alright guy. For some unknown reason, the name really does seem to fit, virtually everyone likes the name and it's a nice mild/non-threatening sounding name for a pit bull. So Mason it is.

***I try to choose simple two syllable names that don't even remotely sound like any command, praise or admonishment I might use ***

Xen's name came from a random video game magazine...I figured 'what the hell?'

She is definitely not 'zen-like' and every smartass who meets her feels obliged to comment on that.

My dogs usually get named one of two ways - I get a name in mind that I plan on using for a dog, or I get a dog and it takes forever to name it lol

Ruger and Jolene's names were both names I had picked out and wanted to use. Ruger's is inspired by the gun, and at the same time I had two other names picked out for future dogs - Fairin and Skyjacker. Fairin ended up going to a foster dog I nearly kept (until her PERFECT home came along)... and they re-named her Amy Skyjacker was given to a huge, deaf American Bulldog mix I was supposed to get... but the rescue lied horribly about his temperament (they said he was kid-safe, and I was pregnant at the time... come to find out the reason he was IN rescue was for going after children!). Jolene's... I don't remember the exact conversation that brought it up, but I remember deciding I was going to get a bitch and name her Jolene. I was looking for a second saluki puppy at the time, so I thought it would be a saluki... then Jo fell into my hands, and the name fit her from the start!

Bukra was "Sooty" with his breeder, and "Jordan" (after the COUNTRY, damn it... NOT the basketball player! lol) when I first got him. But it just didn't quite click, so I searched and searched for a different name that would fit. I finally found Bukra (which means "tomorrow" in Arabic) and it was perfect!

I don't re-use names, ever. So once a certain dog is picked for a name (like Skyjacker was), I won't ever use that name on another animal. I love naming things... I name my vehicles and cell phone lol

I used to be REALLY bad... when I was younger, I would name my pens/pencils/notebooks/etc. Everything got a name. It's part of my OCD lol

I have a list of names I plan on naming the next dog, so I go thru the list and try to fit one to the dog, but it doesn't always work!

Pongo- he was solid white with black ears and started getting spots, I was 14yrs old when I got him and loved 101 Dalmatians! He gets called Pogo 1/2 the time though!

Casper- there was a dog named Casper at the shelter and I wasn't able to adopt him and ended up with Casper who was named Ivan and I didn't like it and being all white, he became Casper.

Ripley- came w/ her name.

Jack- Capt Jack Sparrow (love Johnny Depp)

Ronon- Ronon Dex Stargate Atlantis (Love Jason Mamoa)

Riddick- Chronicles of Riddick (Love Vin Diesel)

Rocky- came w/ name

Circe- Greek Goddess (roommates dog and she likes Japanese anime and most of the names on her list were from them and the other were all greek goddesses and Circe was the best of her list).

DH named Rosie before I met them. I think it came from a song and it fits her. During the Christmas season, DH changes the word of Rudolph and sings "Rosie the red nose pit bull"
Nick was named Romeo when we got him. DID NOT FIT, and I don't like that name anyway. I kinda wanted to name him Teddy, but DH didn't like that and chose Nick.
Frankie was called Francine at the shelter, so we just tweaked that a bit.

Wilson's name came from a couple places.. Wilson Combat (gun company) & Wilson the character on "House". Seemed fitting for such a sweet boy who is still very protective!

Piper.. I couldn't think of a good name for her for awhile. She was SO tiny when I got her and would follow me around everywhere. I was always calling her my little "Pip", but didn't want to name a dog Pip.. so, Piper.

Sako is named after the gun company. NOT the watch! His name at the breeders was "Ammo", but I wasn't a huge fan.. still wanted to stick with the gun theme though.

I also won't reuse names.. which is really difficult when you've had as many pets as I have! And if I know a dog personally, I won't use that name. Like I wanted to name Sako "Ruger", but my trainer friend has a Dobe named Ruger, so that was out.
