Best advice I can give you is get out and go to shows. Many people have already mentioned that. Talk to people see the dogs.

I prefer APBT and more specifically the ADBA style American Pit Bull Terrier. But everyone has their preferences.

There is an ADBA show in the Panhandle of FL Thanksgiving weekend. There you will see ADBA and what a conformation and weightpull is all about.

Check the UKC site to see when the UKC shows are and the same with the AKC, and ABKC.

I will be at the ADBA show in Nov. Let me know if you are comming. Most people at ADBA shows I have been to have been more than willing to talk to people. Great crowd IMO.

And after awhile you would be surprised. I have never had to buy a dog. Networking and meeting people.

When you start to learn about the breeds you will be able to tell the differences on site. Now when it comes to the AKC and UKC because there are SO MANY dual registered Am Staffs in the UKC as American Pit Bull Terriers sometimes the line can be blurred. But with time you can tell the difference.

This is a lifetime commitment do not make a rushed decision. Research first and get out and meet people.
