A tug on a collar or leash coupled with a whatever command you use for "stop that" usually does the trick. As far as showing who's boss it seems like working on stuff like walking without pulling on a leash, making the dog sit while you go through a door first and then letting him come after, fifteen or twenty minutes of obedience a day, or a couple times a day if his attention span holds will go farther that a whipping. It might even cut down on discipline problems so you have to enforce it less.
