The people that name their dogs the same names. Like from 1980-1991 there was Aspen... then 1993-2005 there was Aspen (v. 2.0) and so on.

Those of you that don't work in the animal field probably don't know about this unless you ARE one of those people. But these people really do exist, and I am soooo confused by it.

If you are one of those people, why do you do this?

I understand it's probably easier not to learn a new name for a dog, but doesn't the name just make you think of your buddy you lost a few years ago?

I wonder if these same people do this with their human children if one dies early??

I would think it is done to honor a dog. We have done this with our dogs before. For example, we have had 2 different Cykas, 2 different Spikes (although we did not name the first one), 2 different Snickers, etc. Usually the first pet was lost in a tragic way & we chose to re-name a pet to honor the one we lost.

a customer at a salon I used to work at had a bichon named Snowball. Snowball passed away and a couple months later, they had a new bichon pup named "Snowball". Another groomer working at this salon with me had known this guy for a while, and apearently the dog before Snowball was also named Snowball.... Crazy stuff, eh? I have also known people that will have one pet die, and they will tirelessly look for another one that looks exactly the same to name it the same thing, so that their child doesn't find out.....

Yea i know some guy that named his kids after him lol, he had 3 kids with the same name Pancho. First kid first name was Pancho, second kids middle name Pancho and third kid was name Pancho Pancho. Yes i have named a dog after a dog we used to have, my current dogs name is after my childhood dog and yea ill say its to remember him by.

There are also people who aren't very creative when it comes to naming animals. My aunt and uncle have had several cats, all named Toby, until my cousin got to name the new cat. All their dogs have also been named Cody. And I've asked them if they're honoring the others, nope, that's just the standard name they give to their cats and dogs.

Well I don't name my dogs the same name over and over again. But I haven't started it with the males yet but so far with the females. To honor the ones I've lost. I give the new dog A name and that dogs middle name is the first name of the dog I lost.

For example before I had Sasha I had lost a dog name Princess. So Sasha is Sasha Princess.
So my next female after Sasha passes will have the middle name Sasha.

My next male is probably going to be a Rascal. My dad had a lab named Rascal but nevermind that.

Now my Dad had a Romeo and Juliet and Juliet (Lab) got hit by a car so when he got his beagle he named her Juliet # 2 because you can't have a romeo without a juliet.

That is exactly why we have done it in the past, however, the common link to renaming the same name has only been done with a dog that was the direct offspring of the dog to which we named it after.

My grand parents on the other hand, fucking fruitloops. Every friggin dog that they have ever owned has been named Buttons. Male/ female, doesnt matter, the damn dogs name has always been Buttons. The only dog that had a different name was Harry, and that is only because Harry was given to them at the later stage of his life and they already had a "Buttons" on property. other than that, Id imagine they would have renamed Harry to Buttons.

That's why my parents did it. We had Zack, then we lost him at 13 1/2yrs. old, and when we got the next pup, we named him Zack II (obviously we just called him Zack). They were eerily similar too.. kind of freaky.

I have never actually done this......So I do not know ''why'' some people do it. All I can say is if ''I'' personally would do it,the dog would be named the same or simular as a past dog for the following reason.........

*the dog looked and behaved very simular to his/her predicessor or strongly reminded me of him/her in spirit,and out of honour and respect named the dog the same name or something simular.(probably would use an alternate spelling though, like as an example.....stephanie/stefani or Pete/Repeat)

I had two Rusty`s.After the first one passed and the fact they looked alike.I was calling the new dog rusty out of habbit.I would call him by his other name then forget.I made it simple and just called him Rusty Too.

I thought my friend was the ONLY one. Four shih tzus.... ALL named Buttons, 2 males, 2 females.


I don't recycle names, but I do currently have two "Bumpers", one male and one female. I named the male, and a few years later acquired the female who was already well-acquainted with her name.

My great aunt has had numerous Shih Tzus named "Sam". It's like the dog that never ends..............lol

I would not ever use the same name again. Each dog is different. And to me, honoring a dog would be more like "retiring" the name. Not just slapping it on a couple of other dogs.

I used to go to this church and the pastors daughter had a dog named samuel ( as in the book of samuel in the bible,which is followed by 2nd samuel) so when there dog died a few months later they got another puppy i suggested ......wait for it.....2nd samuel....
