I am glad I read this thread. There is a lab that lives above me and a lab that lives below me and I swear both of them are downright annoying.

She sounds like a true working girl. Time definitely helps...Java is 5 and she's finally slowing down *somewhat*. Still has lots of energy but at least she's matured.

I definitely would suggest getting into some kind of sport or job with her. SAR, Agility, Flyball, etc. Java and I started up in Flyball and she caught on really quick and absolutely loved it. Pretty much the only thing that would tire her out because of the mental stimulation and the physical work.

the exercise thing is a double edges sword. by allowing the dog to run itself tired it works today but tomorrow it has more energy to do it longer. with out stimulating the brain the problem will stay the same. as far as the excitedness you have to keep her mind of what is working her up so much which is the walk. have you tried walking her on leash around the house till she stops shaking then rewarding her by starting the outside walk? also how do u adress the behavior?

This might have already been said, so, sorry, if it has. lol.

But what if you start training her for retrieving work, she might just be so hyper because instinct is telling her to do something, while she isn't getting that need filled. It would work her mentally and physically.

Thanks everyone!

CoolHandJean : I would like to try that. Right now, shes a HUGE fetch addict. That's the most retrieving shes done. lol

Rednecksurf: I've tried walking her around the house, it doesn't work, it would probably take a few hours. Her energy is unbelievable. I try to calm her down by letting her drink some water, then shes okay for about a minute, then it starts again. So I just take her out and let her run so she stops shaking. She doesn't pull of act out or anything, just shakes.

Does she have a frisbee to fetch? Thats how my friend tires out her Lab/RR mix. He's six and he still vibrates and makes the "lab noise". He doesn't have the stamina he used to, but he's still pretty excitable. Seriously, he lives for his Kong frisbee. He really likes the Ruffwear float dummy thingys too.

LOL keep your negative comments out of my thread. That was completely irrelevant.

This sounds like exactly what she needs.

She sounds like my ADHD Lab, Zoey... I'll be happy to send Zoey to you if you like.

Lots of mental stimulation, leave it, take it, stay, down, come, heel, drop it... anything you can think of that will work on wearing out her mind... but in the meantime, if you would like, I'll be happy to send you Zoey!!

This is the team locate page for the Western region of Ontario:
North American Flyball Association | Flyball Locator

Flyball could be really good for her because, like agility, it's a mix of "OMG! running! OMG jumping!" and really working their brain!

If you are interested in flyball, find a couple of teams near you and email them. Ask to come out to a practice and if they are doing lessons.

I know that for my lab/sighthound mix dock diving does not really tire him out for any length of time.

good luck!

Default My Lab is SO hard to deal with
Hey everyone, most of you know I got a Lab puppy last year. She's an amazing dog but she's starting to drive me nuts. I don't know what to do.

Everyone I know, that has a Lab says they're hyper, and they tell me to make sure she gets lots of exercise to calm her down. Their advice is NOT working.

Harmony gets about 3 hours a day, JUST to run. Not including all of her walks, I take her everywhere I possibly can with me and her hyper issue does NOT change. It doesn't effect her behaviour though. She's an amazing dog, shes the smartest dog I've ever met. She can do any trick you teach her and she learns really fast, she has PERFECT listening skills when I take her out, she walks perfectly, doesn't pull or anything, right in a heel position, she has pretty much a 100% recall, she ALWAYS listens no matter what, and she can walk off a leash on the street. She's absolutely perfect so that isn't the problem.

The problem is, no matter what, she's always hyper, and I feel bad for her. When I bring out her leash to take her for a walk, she wants to jump all over the place but she knows shes not allowed to, so she sits there and shakes, and I feel bad. When we first get out on a walk, usually I let her off the leash and run around so she gets some energy out, but when I don't, she walks perfectly but she shakes, because shes so hyper. I exercise her more then most people ever exercise they're dogs, but it doesn't help. Is there any way I can fix this?

Sorry it's so long :P

So she's about a year old? If you are giving her plenty of exercise and mental stimulation then I would say the only thing that will cure her energy is time and age.

Work. She needs to work. She needs a job. SAR, therapy, hunting, dock dogs, SOMETHING. She is a working breed that needs to have a purpose in her life. That's my take on it.

She's training for dock dogs right now. But I highly doubt that's gonna make a difference, she still does what a dock dog would be doing right now and it isn't helping.

you need to take her out on bird trials. labs are always insanely hyper when theyre working bred, but giving her a real job will help, but it wont go away completely.

Growing up with Labs, this is pretty.. normal. They're Labs. Labs are annoying and hyper, usually til they're oh.. 3 or 4 LOL. Although, my parents Lab is 10 and he still has the mentality of a 2yr. old. I tell them that his body will go before his mind does!

You sound like you're doing the right things though. Maybe give her something to do on her walks, like carry a backpack, pull something?

I agree with giving her a job. Dock dogs is good, but maybe something else where she can really use her brain. SAR would be great, or hunting. Agility maybe? That's a sport geared towards high energy dogs.

Thanks for all of the input. I want to get into agility, I just don't know where to go or where to start. I live in Toronto, and I'm not familur with dog people here. She's not a problem for me, but I feel bad for her, when she has so much energy that she can't get out.

Yes, this is typical lab behavior!

Have you considered dock dogs for Harmony? Does she like to play ball? You could always enroll her into fly ball or agility. Lure coursing is also an option.

It just sounds like she needs something more to do than just walking. Do you have a treadmill? You could always wear her out on that when you aren't able to exercise.

Does she like to swim? Maybe you could take her to the lake/beach to swim or if you have a pool!

Well, I googled "Toronto dog agility" and these are some sites I found. I have no clue if they're reputable trainers, but you could look into it.

She swims atleast 3 times a week, and I'm training her to do dock dogs. She runs for 3 hours every day, with Taz or I throw something or run with her. Plus I walk her everywhere. I'm going to look into agility thanks for the input.
