I have a sign by the front gate that reads.

Is there an afterlife?
Trespass here and find out.

This has nothing to do with dogs but more about how dumb people are and don't read signs. There was this huge roid monkey I used to work with and there were signs all over the kitchen area for days saying something along the lines of at 3pm on such a date everything in the fridge will be thrown out. Well, his stuff was thrown out. He freaked out! Ripped open the garbage bags to get his stuff back and yelled at the old lady. His excuse, "I dont have time to read signs!!!".

I was told the same thing by my insurance company. They suggested using No Tresspassing signs and if we felt safer mentioning dogs we could put up one of those Crossing signs or just the fire department signs saying dogs in the house. They said not to ever use any sign that could be interpreted as admitting our dog could bite so no Beware of Dog or Guard Dog On Duty type signs.
I was told the opposite by several high profile lawyers. Warning signs can help you in your case.

I have one that says "Doberman Protective Services". It really began as a joke because our first doberman was so sweet and friendly she wouldn't have protected anything. Now it is a warning. Jack is friendly, but does have a more protective instict about him.

Did you know that if you have a "Beware of Dog" sign up, and your dog bites someone (or really does anything deemed aggressive), you are automatically liable (regardless of the situation) because by putting that sign up, you're admitting that your dog can be aggressive?
That's not necessarily true everywhere. While it may be true in your area, in an area in which I lived in Georgia, if you have a dog that is protection trained or a particular breed (the breed is county-based,) having a "BEWARE OF DOG" sign prevents you from being held liable in case someone is bitten by your dog. It is also a requirement of that county to display those signs if you have a dog that fell under the clause in their county law.

no signs .... my dogs are way too friendly for folks to have to worry about.... if they are on my property uninvited, they have much bigger concerns than my dogs.... and inside of 40 feet my wife is a much better shot with a short gun than I am...

Yeah, I live in MI and up here people are not only stupid but they lack common sense. So, posting that your dog could bite means lawyers have a field day suing you for owning a known vicious dog. Makes much more sense to consider a warning sign more along the lines of Enter at Risk. I really need to move.

At our old place we had a DOG IN YARD sign as the front door was behind a big privacy fence and it was to prevent people from hopping it and knocking on the door. We do have a BEWARE OF PIT BULL sign inside the house though!

Ya... I don't like putting any ''PIT BULL'' references up. In the ghetto that is pretty well an invitation for some dumbass to steal your dog.

I'm sure that could be worded a lot better, but that's the gist of it!

Yes. I have *No Tresspassing* and *Dogs on Premisis* signs up.Porch, yard entrygate and 2 on the alley fence. We have stupid people that taunt our dogs, and my utility meters are in the back yard,so we do have signs up so people KNOW we have dogs(signs are not breed specific). We also have everything locked(gate, side door, front door, etc)so if someone gets in when we don't want them to,its considered a B&E.

I don't know if it's true but we were told that if you have a sign like beware of dog and your dog bites someone you get in a lot more trouble because it's basically admitting you know your dog is aggressive. Whether or not that true I don't really know.
We don't have a sign because 1, we just got our pup a little while ago and I just haven't gotten around to getting one 2. what's to beware of haha, if someone broke in when we weren't there Athena is in her crate so there's no worry and if she is out that means I am home. Believe me, she'll keep on sleeping and it's me you got to worry about. Now that I'm thinking about it I should have beward of cat signs. Sometimes my cats even scare me and if someone disturbs them it's war.

I honestly don't think it makes a difference. I've been told both it's more of a liability and less of a liability.

Warning signs. Don't worry that putting up a "Beware of Dog" sign is tantamount to admitting that your dog is a menace, landing you in bigger trouble if the dog does ever hurt someone. First of all, the sign will help avoid bites - which is far preferable than winning a legal battle over a bite later. Second, if you think your dog might hurt someone, there's almost certainly already more evidence of the dog's dangerousness than the fact that you put up a warning sign.

I learned something new today!

Going to tell my friend with 2 rotts to change his sign!

Yeah I have been told both as well. The K9 officer told us to have signs. we have outdoor dogs the guard the property at night, so if someone does jump the gate, at least they had warning. Plus most burglars would move on just seeing the signs. Honestly I really just think what matters is how good your lawyer is. Ive heard so many crazy stories in my crim classes where the burglar sues the property owners because he gets hurt trying to steal there things, and wins

Interesting, I wonder why everyone around me has always said that.

As a horse owner, I'm all to aware of liability stuff. Horses are considered 'attractive nuisances' (or whatever pools are considered, I may have wording wrong), so if someone decides to wander into the field where my horse is, and gets run over, bit, whatever, I'm at fault! It's happened many times on one of the horse forums I'm on.. people have taken to planting super thorny bushes, using no climb fence, etc. to keep people out of their fields.
