Zeuceone is right. Make sure to get sun SCREEN, not sun tan lotion. If you get sun tan lotion you will have a crispy critter on your hands! My vet said the spray type sun screen is best. IDK why. But that's what I used on him & he was fine. And of course get the highest SPF possible, just like you would with a person. You want him to get the most protection from the sun he can get.
Good luck & kudos to you for taking good care of your puppers this summer! ![]() Peace & happiness ... |

I have never had to use lotion, but my breeder told me if Ike's nose and around his eyes didn't fill in with black pigment or fur that I should use spray on sunscreen to protect him if he was going to be outside for long periods in the sun. Lucky me, he got his "eyeliner" and his nose colored all the way in before his first summer

There are some products on the market specifically for dogs.
I googled and found this one, which seems to be reputable. http://vetmedicine.about.com/gi/o.ht...stom%26ID%3D53 Also an interesting article on dogs & sunburn: http://vetmedicine.about.com/od/dise...sunscreens.htm |

We use children's sunscreen on Zoey when we go to the beach. I am pretty sure there are dog specific brands, I've just never searched. I'll have to check out Jazzy's links for sure. Zoey hates it at first but after a few minutes she is fine - I do her snout and ears and underside. We don't stay out long but I still worry about her getting burnt.

The main places Lily would need it would be her nose, eyes, and ears, and the top her her muzzle, but she would just lick off anything on her nose/muzzle, so it's kind of pointless.
How would you put sunblock around the eyes? Wouldn't it get in the eyes? This is how my pink girl looks when she's excited/hot, and also when you wake her up from sleeping ![]() ![]() |

What brands have people used? And if you used the spray on, how did you keep it from getting in their eyes? We are going canoeing next weekend and I don't want Mater's face to get all burnt. |

there's one i purchased at PetsMart that's made for dogs, so if they lick it off, it gets near the eye, etc it's not toxic or w/e.
![]() Babygirl is VERY VERY pink, EVERYWHERE. and if we're out for longer than 15min, I put it on her. some wknds, if I'm gonna have the pation door open, I'll slather her from head to toe too (b/c you can see see her pink skin under her white fur get pinker in sun exposure, which means it can burn on her). i do it so she can sun bathe in peace. and we reapply frequently since she rubs and licks. when i first brought her home as a baby, my vet told me to be very diligent about that from day one b/c he said just like ppl, fair skinned dogs can get skin cancer from being burned and exposed over the years. and what's cheaper? sunscreen or Cancer treatments? lol |
