Because a guy was literally in tears asking us to take his 8mo old "pure pit bull". He said the he was afraid the other peoples that wanted her would either try to fight her or leave her outside . He knows how we are with dogs and didn't want her to go anywhere but here with us.

He lived with his parents at the time and they have 3 dogs already and there lab was pregnant and the dad wanted to keep one of the lab pups. So told him he had to get rid of her. I think part of the reason was that the guy/kid(19) is too irresponsible to have dog and parents knew it too.


Never had one before and wasn't particularly excited about it and stalled for three weeks. Not that I had issue with having and APBT but we had put our 14year old Dalmation,(Diamond)down about 6 months prior and had put our 15 yo Dalmatian(Billy) down about 4 years prior and were very happy to be a single dog family with our grumpy old curmudgeon Nate.

Now we have Moka who I am not even sure if she will be staying here or going back to her former residence.I took her to the vet when she got in a argument with one of her house mates( she was attacked) and brought her back here to recuperate.

I have NEVER paid for a dog I have had and never will, they choose me, I don't get to chose them. I think that is the only moral way to acquire a dog.

Last December 09 I DID buy a dog for my sister---sort of-- she was living with these people and were going to breed her for a second time, and I could tell they didn't truly LOVE her. The only way to get her out of there in a hurry was to pay them for her. So I did the right thing before she could be bred.

I love my Patches more than I ever thought possible. her eyes are so sweet, you can see love whenever she looks at you. She is Black with white markings.

I didn't choose to get one at first. Gypsy was only supposed to be a very temporary foster when she first came to me at nine weeks. I knew absolutely NOTHING about the breed.

After a couple of weeks of failed possible adopters, I realized that she was mine, lol. I started doing research and now, nearly six years down the road...I'm still learning! Fell in love with the breed starting with her, and then they just solidified into my absolute favorite breed the more I researched on them.

Was wondering why you guys chose a pitbull-type dog opposed to a lab or mastiff? Did you get one cause they're cute, or cause they're cool? Good companions? Or any other reason out there. Just curious. If a story is behind your dog, feel free to share!

I got my first pitbull when I was 16 because they are very sweet dogs and they are high energy like what I was looking for in a companion. I am very active so I needed a dog that could keep up with me.

Well, we got our first one because I felt she was abused so I purchased her from a lady I worked with.. fell in love with the breed.. so we continued rescueing them.. (only have purchased one more from a BYB... but when I saw him, It was love.. RIP Rajah - long story) the rest have been rescues! (I'd rescue a Lab if one was tocome to us in need. I do not go looking for them.. they find us!).. but pitbulls are the thing.. and as sad as it is.. they are also the *thing to be abused and neglected*.. not saying other breeds are not.. but not many of them find their way to our home needing help..

Well ive been around them since i was 16 with my older brother introducing them to my family. Now my dad, sister, nieces, nephews have them. I saw how much of great dogs they are and i couldn't help and get them myself.

My uncle was a breeder in the 80-90's. So I used to visit alot and fell in love with the first two dogs they had. Boom Boom aka Nick the Greeks Boom Boom was my favorite and Corvinos Red Demon. My aunt and uncle had. That's why I fell in love with the breed and learned alot from my uncle and their dogs.

I've always liked dogs and actually need to have one to feel "at home". My grandma was the type who kept every stray that crossed her path and my mom always allowed us to hav a dog at home. Probably would have had more than one if it wasn't for my dad being stern about number,lol.

When I realized my dog was going to die soon (age), I talked my husband into letting us get another dog in hopes that when the old man died it would make grieving a bit easier on us. The old man, Patches by name, had been around since I was a teen and had been there for all of my kids lives. Truthfully, I just wanted another dog. The help with the grief thing is still valid though!

I asked about Pits and Rotties since I like the looks and personality. The hubby refused a Pit flat out. So, we made a list of what we wanted in a dog and then went through page after page of breeds. Wanna guess what type of dogs were the only ones that fit? The bully breeds!

We browsed the bully breeds and found we agreed on the AB. We got Ike. During the first year we were socializing like mad with people and dogs. Naturally, my brother and sister have Pits and they played with Ike. The hubby met and got to know them and was very impressed. I got involved with anti-BSL groups and the hubbys soft spot for the "underdog" kicked in. Next thing you know, my brother needs a home for one of his dogs due to a move and we got out APBT, Rita, that way.

Now, the hubby is looking at going over the road as a truck driver due to the economy. He wants a dog to take with him to relieve the lonliness. He is gung ho about getting a Staffordshire Bull Terrier because its everything he likes in a dog and truck sized. HA! The awesome of the "pit bull" grouping strikes again!

well lets see i guess b/c my grandparents always had pit bulls and i grew up with them. they also always had boston terriers and i guess that is why i have one of each now.lol

I think watching too much Dog Whisperer may have brainwashed me (just from the amount of times per show he mentions pit bulls). I was also looking for a people friendly, active, smaller breed than the Rotties, Dobies and GSDs I have had my whole life. I'm sure Puck will grow up to be gigantic just to spite me.

Well Im not a fan of 'common' breeds like labs and goldens so they were out and I didnt want anything long hair and I wanted a female (Im not into the leg lifting) We werent looking for a specific breed. Hubby was leaning towards a GSD though as thats a favorite breed of his. We were just looking for a young pup who would be able to grow up with our son. I pointed out a few pit-type dogs and he wasnt interested then while I was showing our son a pig he came to me and had a pup he wanted to show me... sure enough it was 5-6 month old Harley laying down calmly in the front of his cage just watching people. Hes now pushing 13 months and is an awesome dog. I did cave in on the male thing, but as it worked out so far, hes still a squatter! Unfortunatly I admit to buying him before learning about the breed (I had worked with a few at a the groomer I worked at but that was it), but I have no regrets, we couldnt be happier, he has opened many eyes to the real pit bull and everyone loves him.

When I met my boyfriend, he already had Notch (an Amstaff). I really liked Notch, and then we went to his friend's house, and met his friend's two APBTs, Wide Body and Tiger. I really liked them as well. His friend bred the two dogs, and that is how we got Tess.

It made me do a bit of research, once I got the pup, because I was so taken by her. Now since I know a bit more, I would have done things a little differently, but I'm happy to have the dogs I do in my life.

There have been a lot of breakins in the neighborhood lately so I wanted a "bigger" dog then my schnauzer to help guard the house (well rather deter people). I went to the shelter and fell in love with Trina. My friend has had pit bulls and loves them and she told me shed help me with her. Well she's been an awesome pup and housetrained in about 3 weeks no problems and is the best well behaved puppy I've ever had. I will always get my dogs from the shelter now.

Well, I grew up with German Shepherds (and a Shepherd/pit bull mix). My two favorite breeds have always been German Shepherds and Pit Bulls.

Then, I got married and we wanted to get a dog. Well, it turns out that my ex (yep, marriage didn't last long) was "scared" of German Shepherds AND pit bulls. They wanted a corgi. Personally, I'm not a fan of deformed looking dogs, so after much deliberation. We settled on a Border Collie. Then, we got a second Border Collie. Then, we got divorced and the dogs were split up.

I was just going to stick with one dog for awhile, but I saw a rescue listing for Sinead. She was about 6 hours from being put down at NYACC when I agreed to foster her. Well, let's just say that foster turned into an adoption within just a few days. And that is how I ended up with a pit bull.

My first experience with pit bulls came several years ago when I started volunteering with a local humane society. There was a former bait dog hanging around, and when I pulled up into their gated lot with my truck...when I came back out, she was spread eagle in the back wagging her tail as if to say, "all right! let's go!" She had hacked off ears and a scar on her face.

I bonded with her there, but as she was a pit bull and killed cats, no one wanted her. When the State said the shelter was "overcrowded" and would be enacting a mandatory euthanization, she was on the top of the list.

I called a friend of mine who lives in South Florida and had a pit bull (neutered, male.) He was on vacation in New Jersey, drove down from NJ to North Georgia, adopted Leda, and drove down to South Florida He still has her today. Gosh...she must be...10 years old or so?

I got a book from the library with all the AKC breeds and descriptions.The AST and SBT just had this look about about them that I liked.Those two dogs seemed to fit the description (looks wise) that the AKC had listed.I did some more research and found out about The American Pit Bull Terrier in an encylopedia...they picked the meanest looking dog I'd ever seen for the photo.After that I just got really interested in learning about the APBT...I got lucky and found Richard F. Stratton's first book at a pet store.I got a ton of info from that book,and bought every other book on the breed that I could find.I was 15 when I started reading about the dogs,and two years later I bought my first dog.I've been hooked ever since.I'll always own at least one APBT until I die.

I have always loved the look of Dobies, Boxers, Bulldogs, APBT, and pretty much any short haired muscular dog. I also LOVE the temperment, I like to know things and when I first saw my 1st "pit bull" and knew what kind of dog it was was in the movie Whitefang and it said the name, I then looked it up and fell in love, before that I loved the bull terrier's triangle head from the original homeward bound (dont think that is the name but yea you know what I am talking about). I did not get my 1st bully until after I got out of my parents house, and only had that one for about 3 months buecause he was an unstable dog may him RIP. I then got Goren about a year later, but before that I was watching shows like Dog Whisperer and fell inlove with Popeye, and the AC shows on animal planet and just took in the information that they gave and about the temperment, I better educated myself with the internet before I finally got my 1st dog and have been doing it every since, I guess out of this long drown out thing you could say...

The reason why is complex with looks and temperment I did not even know how goofy they can be until I owned one, but I fell in love with the resiliance and terrier determination as well as the pain tolerance (I am a cluts and it helps a lot)

I chose my apbt because of all the reasons we love the bread.tYney are the most loyal and people friendly dogs I have ever encountered. Also, although I am active I live in a relatively small apartment but love big, athletic dogs. Although my little girl us only 45 lbs she acts and plays like a BIG dog but is perfectly suited for apartment living. Most importantly, I chose a pit because I am a strong believer in rescuses and more pitbulls are euthanized in this country than any other bread by a large margin. For all of you considering a pit, I emplore you to consider a rescue. My girl Piper is living proof that there are amazing dogs out there in need of homes. If we all stop adopting from irresponsible, money hungry breeders they will go out of buisness and we can save some of the millions of beautiful animals killed each year. And remember, when you adopt from a reputible, non kill shelter, you save not only your dogs life, but the dog who replaces it at the shelter as well. Sorry for preaching.

Yeah, same here. Me and the fam are rabid fans of Homeward Bound 1&2(no, seriously. Every time we see a dog that looks remotely close to an AB, we go 'AWWWW HE LOOKS LIKE CHANCE!')and after a while, my mom was like 'Wow. I really would like a dog with the temperament and personality of Chance.' We searched around and found out he was an AB. No problemo, we really don't feed into the hype about Bully Breeds. And then we researched more Bully Breeds. ANYWAY, around that time, my moms friend's dog was having puppies. The guy wasn't a BYB, but he wasn't a good breeder. He sold puppies to people he KNEW were..how do I say this..TERRIBLE DOG-FIGHTING PEOPLE. So I convinced her to get Princess. Even though we bought her, I consider it a rescue. Had she been sold to the neighbourhood thugs, she'dve had a sure life of fighting.
