Default Rescue Stories
My rescue Pit Bull (they claimed that a blue male bred their red nose female...idk I saw the mother...she was a red nose...malnutritioned but could be real nice looking... Axle could be a mix) pup Axle. He is now approximately 20 weeks old. I rescued him from an abusive home when he was 4 weeks old. My husband, son and myself went to a home looking at a truck that was advertised for sale. The home was disgusting and reeked of feces and urine that you could smell from outside ( guess the inside of their house was an unmaintained home zoo). The yard wasn't in any better shape than the house. While my husband looked at the truck for sale I found Axle, a tiny brindle Pit Bull pup. He seemed very timid and showed signs of abuse. After talking to the owners I found that Axle's mother had been ignorantly impregnated on her first cycle; therefore; she abandoned the pups. They said that Axle was the last pup left. The owners of Axle’s mother did not seem to know nor care about the proper care that the abandon litter needed. Axle at 4 weeks old was occasionally receiving table scraps as meals. Axle was so malnutritioned and abused that he had no extra puppy wrinkles/skin, his coat was thin, he was skinny, had scars, etc. I felt so bad for the poor pup that I told the owners “We don’t want to buy your truck…but I will take the puppy”. They agreed as long as I paid them $40. Amazingly I believe that Axle knew that he had been saved from a life of misery...if he survived. From day one he has been very cooperative, willing to please, loving, etc. Axle’s intelligence level; especially for his age; he continues to astonishes every person he becomes acquainted with. He was fully house/kennel trained in approximately 1 week, does not chew anything other than his belongings, no annoying whining or barking (only when in need of love, food and potty breaks and even then it is not obnoxious). I am constantly complimented on his behavior skills and loving nature. We are all very happy to have Axle in our family.

My friends recently rescued 3 pit bull puppies from some "friends" of theirs.

These people had an unaltered male and female that they left alone and let out together, even while the female was in heat.

They didn't notice that the female was noticeably pregnant (I noticed it, and I know nothing about pregnant dogs/breeding). She was so far along that she sat on the male's foot and he screamed and couldn't pull his foot out from under her.

So she had the litter.

These people took horrible care of the mother and pups. Didn't feed the mother enough, and were incapable of cleaning up after the pups (even though they are home 24 hours a day).

My friends went to visit them when the puppies were about 5 weeks old. The puppies were living in a crate, that had about 2 inches of waste on the floor of the crate. Someone had already taken 2 of the puppies due to these conditions. The people rarely let the mother in with the pups, but were always complaining about "what a bad mother she is" and how she didn't feed them enough (even though they had teeth, could start puppy food now).

My friends took the last puppies (3) after they found out one had died the night before from dehydration.

The puppies are now being fostered by my friends, who are keeping the male.

The kicker? Shortly after the pups were rescued, the female ran away (these people just let the dogs run loose outside). The people called my friends asking to have one of the pups to replace the female. They told them no effing way.

I work as a police officer and was dispatched to a call regarding a woman that went to her rental property (vacant home) and found that several people were living there.
The water had been turned off and these people had used the bathtub as a toilet--the smell of feces was all but overpowering. There were two puppies in the home. One was dead, the other was an emaciated little male Pit (Vet thought he was about 12 weeks old). Several co-workers and I believe that he and the other puppy were taken in a burglary as Pit Bull puppies are often traded/sold for drugs in this area. I took the puppy home and he has become such a joy in my life. I've waited 24 yrs to get a dog.....since I moved out of my parents' home. It wasn't ideal, this unplanned adoption but I'm determined to make this work. We've completed Puppy Kindergarten and I intend to continue w/ training. I thank heaven for this website, for all of the info and advice. My experience with dogs is limited to Boston Terriers and German Shepherd Dogs so APBT's are new to me. What a wonderful little boy I've been blessed with! He is now about 7 months old and so much fun. Bless you for the work you do in placing these wonderful dogs.......

My first pit bull was found by hunters. She was tied to a tree and left to starve. The hunters were scared of her because of her breed so they left her there overnight. However, they felt so bad for her that they went back for her the next day. They dropped her off at a shelter. She was at the shelter for 3 months when she got cancer. A vet I know took pity on her and said that she would remove the tumors if I gave her a home for life.

I had to change insurance companies and put in a fence to get approved, but I did it. We've been together for 4 years now. She is in the final weeks of her life and she has been an absolute joy. I am going to miss this fabulous dog.

my best friend and her boyfriend just took in a female bloodhound... she is till pretty young but had been running the streets around town near the place her bf works and could tell this dog hadnt been well taken care of, her ribs were showing and everything.. they know who the owners are, not very great people, the husband is a P.O.S and they live in not quiet what i would call a house but whatever... well anyways he got tired of seeing this poor dog run around town so my friend went and picked up the dog and brought her home.... needless to say about 30 mins after my friend picked up the dog the owners were at the shop asking about the dog... they told them they hadnt seen it, but oh well, they dot deserve to have that dog if they cant take care of it! wasnt exactly the kind of dog they were looking to get but either way this dog has a good home now!!

Why yes I did and I love him very much. And I couldn't be happier with my choice to take him. Even though it was not planned nor exactly what I planned as my next Pit Bull bred...but I am happy, Axle is happy and my family is happy...everyone loves him (even the animal nontolerants in my family) that is all that matters. He is our

I didn't buy him for any sort of paper status. I bought him in order to save him from a life of hell. The way I see it is that it was an adoption fee.

Adoption fee...LOL I'm glad you like him, but you bought a dog from a BYB.

A guy my brother knew was breeding his Pits. The mother abandoned the litter, so my brother took a female at 3 weeks old as the "breeder" didn't care for the pups. My brother already had 2 dogs and lost his job. The little female was named Princess and lived with them for over a year. She got double ear infections and there was no moeny to treat her. My brother was going to take her to a shelter because he couldn't find her a home after a few months of trying, but with her being older, black, a Pit and having health problems, I knew she would be put down. So, I talked the hubby into letting me have her. We renamed her Rita, are battling the ear infections (she is on meds again til the 22nd and then back to the vet for another check) and she is awesome! Sweet, smart, cuddle bug with a great sense of humor and she loves all other critters from kids to dogs to cats to birds.

My friends were looking to get a cat. Their daughter called and said she knew a guy who had a Pit he couldn't care for at all. The dog was being fed a piece of bologna a day as the family was very poor and couldnt even feed themselves. My friend met the dog, fell in love and they have had him for over a year now. Hes a great dog, knows all kinds of tricks and is the biggest lover! I do get on them about his weight, though. He is kinda...umm..fat! He was just so skinny when they got him that they just can't say no when he wants food, but there are worse things.

I have too many rescue stories to tell since all my dogs and cats were adopted, but I love reading stories of real rescues. Giving a breeder money for an animal isn't rescuing or adopting, it's buying and only encourages them to continue to breed for profit. If the woman's home is in such deplorable condition, maybe a phone call to your local AC should be made???

Yeah, sorry I don't consider this a "rescue" either, just showing a byb that no matter what shitty condition they put pups in some sucker will pay them to breed.

yeah i'm sorry, i agree with simms, furkidmom, and GP.

that is NOT rescuing. you still payed (doesn't matter if its $40 or $100 or whatever) the BYB
and buying a puppy from BYBs/puppy mills is NOT "rescuing/saving"

I have no interest in discourageing anyone from loveing thier pet and enjoying them for what they are. You most likely are giving that pup a better chance of life than what he started out with. There are distinct differences between rescue and purchasing a animal or even stealing one lol. Your little dog has no idea what it is to be a victim. Good luck with him!

Almost four years ago, my Champion smooth collie Gabby was stolen from my back yard.
This is why I now have my Rottie, Harley. I still have one retired Champion, Conner who just turned 15.

Even to this day I still make occasional walks through the local shelter just in case.
About 3 years ago we were walking through the shelter and saw this young white Am. Staff sitting in one of the kennels. He was 9 months old and had been there for over 3 months.

My BF and I both thought he was the most striking fellow we had ever seen, and just had to ask to take him out in the exercise yard and play with him. There was an instant connection between him and my BF. This puppy would not leave his side, other than to retrieve a toy that we threw and come immediately back.

In talking to a shelter worker, we found out that if they did not find a home for this dog soon, (They called him Ross) they were going to euthanize him. Well that just wasn't going to happen. Being an Am Staff he was considered a "Special" adoption and it was supposed to take several days to complete. But, because of my years of training and knowing exactly what to tell them, we were able to get him that day.

Within a few days his name was changed to Jake. A few months later BF and Jake moved in with me and my two dogs. We knew from the beginning to be aware of possible DA and although he is a bossy little cuss, over all we have a great family of K9s here. Jake has turned out to be a very good ambassador for his breed and has been very instrumental in educating a lot of people about the breed.

We do not set our dogs up for failure and they are only together when properly supervised. Jake sleeps in our bedroom at night, while Harley's job is to watch the rest of the house. The old man stretches out on the sofa.

As I have said before, Jake is the first Am Staff that I have actually lived with, but I'm hooked. I've never had a dog that I had to be aware of DA before, but it's worth it. Everything else about him is more than I could ask for.

Normally, I would agree. However, its a Pit and many shelters and city or county AC still automatically euthanize any Pits they take in that are not owner claimed within a certain number of days. They would have confiscated the dog(s) and not likely released them back to the owner. So, calling AC could have meant a death sentence for this pup if the poster hadn't payed the $40.

You can't save them all. There are just not enough good solid homes. That statement does not apply exclusively to the APBT or types. It includes all animals.
