I spent all this week trying to get a cable modem ISP working properly, but to no avail. Grande Communications made several repair visits trying to fix their problem of going offline many times through the day. Nothing they tried fixed it, so I disconnected and returned the modem, cancelled the service and hooked my SBC DSL service back up. Fortunately, I hand not terminated that service.
The problem was that it would work fine for a time and then just quit. The modem would go "offline" and that was that until it would just go back "online". I discovered that I could sometimes bring the service back by disconnecting/reconnecting the cable coax. Also, I noticed that the failures seemed to mostly happen during the heat of the day. That led me to think that the problem was an exterior connection which was marginal until heated up and then it would go open. I suggested that to one of the repairmen I spoke with and he assured me that all the connections at the pole, in the crawl space and inside the house were good. Whether any check was made of any other points is anybody's guess. As a side note, I noticed that every time I did a speed to a Grande speed test point, it always read about 31.5 Mbps. My service was for up to 30 Mbps. However, when testing into other cable speed testing sites the speed range was from 21 to 27. Interesting. Is their "claimed" speed more an advertising come-on than reality? Who knows? By the way, I instructed Grande billing I had no intention of paying for the five days service because of all the down time. Not a happy camper. |
