Israel's PM, Benjamin Netanyahu addressed the United States Congress today. Here are some of my observations. Please feel free to add your own!
1. It was an amazing show of respect for Israel and there was unprecedented bipartisan cheering and standing ovations throughout the speech. It was a warm welcome to an extent not see in congress, basically ever, and Netanyahu was treated as no other foreign dignitary. 2. The warm reception and standing ovations made clear that President Obama stands in sharp contrast with Congress. Obama is now isolated and out of touch with the true representatives of the American people. 3. Netanyahu affirmed his willingness to support a Palestinian state, if the Palestinians break off their alliance with terrorist group Hamas and recognizes the right if Israel to exist as a Jewish state. 4. Netanyahu rejected an imposed peace (as Obama has been attempting to impose), and will only accept a negotiated peace. Congress cheered. 5. Netanyahu spoke about annexing the main settlement blocks, but acknowledged that some settlements would wind up outside Israel's borders. What that means for the citizens of those towns is unclear. But it only goes three ways: Either they will live under Palestinian occupation, be ethnically cleansed by the Palestinians, or they will be forcefully and brutally transferred by Israeli troops as happened in Gaza. That will cause potentially a mini civil war in Israel and Israeli society will never be the same. IMO, it would be better to allow the settlers to live under Palestinian occupation. 6. Netanyahu made a few very string points: that under Obama's 1967 plan, the Palestinian missiles would take only 60 seconds to hit any house in Israel. He also pointed out that currently, out of 300 million Arabs, only 1 million of those Arabs enjoy democracy - those living in Israel. 7. Literally, during Netanyahu's speech, the IAEA formally announced that Iran is currently manufacturing nuclear weapons, and that the reactor that Israel bombed recently in Syria was a nearly completed nuclear weapons plant. 8. Netanyahu thanked the US profusely for its support and confirmed that the US has no better friend and ally in the world than Israel. |
