April 11, 2011: The U.S. Air Force recently revealed that its operations in Libya are costing about $4 million a day. For the first ten days of the operation, total U.S. cost was $50 million a day. But now that American combat aircraft have been withdrawn, along with several U.S. warships, and the daily cost will probably be closer to $10-20 million. How does this compare with other American war costs? All daily war costs shown below are in current dollars (adjusted for inflation);
American Revolution (1776-83)- $822,000 War of 1812 (1812-15)- $1.46 million. Mexican War (1846-49)- $2.18 million Civil War (1861-65)- $55 million (75 percent for the Union forces) Spanish American War (1898-99)- $22 million. World War I (1917-21) cost $229 million World War II (1941-45 )- $2.9 billion (yes, billion) Korean War (1950-53)- $328 million Vietnam (1965-75)- $205 million Persian Gulf War (1990-91)- $567 million Afghanistan War and Other War-On-Terror Operations (2001-10)- $98 million Iraq War (2003-10)- $307 million http://www.strategypage.com/htmw/htp.../20110411.aspx |
