Default Will you tune in to the State of the Union address?
I’m curious how many USPO members plan to watch or listen to President Bush’s State of the Union address this evening.

I generally don’t watch these, regardless of who the President is. I find it much simpler and quicker to peruse news sites and blogs the day after the address in order to uncover the highlights. I think the last one I caught live was the SOTU address after 9/11, which I found to be less than inspiring and not very revealing. Frankly, it pains me to hear Bush speak.

What about you?

I hate the State of the Union address. Way too much standing and clapping, then sitting, then standing, then clapping, then sitting halfway, only to be interrupted by standing and clapping again. A ten minute speech is drawn out into nearly 64 hours of empty rhetoric, strange ramblings and doomed promises. Plus, add on to the fact that Bush never says anything new, but just kind of repeats the same things in every single speech and you've got quite an uninspiring event, in my opinion.

I'll read it from the web. It's way quicker and I like making a George Bush voice in my head as I read it.

Is it on at 9 EST? If so, I'll be in the gym running, so I'll probably watch it on the TV in there. If it's on at 8 EST, I probably wouldn't be able to catch it. And I haven't set my DVR to record it.

Personally, I wish it would happen on the weekend so that I could play drink-Dubya in earnest. Sips for grammatical gaffes, talk about "hard work", etc would be fun.

Edit: Check that, there's a Bulls game on tonight. I will not be watching.

I have to. My Government class requires that I watch, analyze, and provide a fairly intricate response to it.

I'm always hopeful something will pop out that gives a clue to the real agenda. I guess thats pretty unlikely. Still, I feel I must witness. These are important times and shouldn't be taken lightly - I do really feel obligated.

I'm with you. Most of what the President says is just bullshit for the sheeple anyway. I prefer to see what they do rather than hear what they say they will do.
It's all bullshit anymore.
The President says "umpteen thousand jobs were created"
The opposition says "burger flippers"
The President says, "we have to fight terrors were we find it"
The opposition whines about civil rights and the President does not do it anyway.
Yeah, it's a waste of time to sit there and watch the well rehearsed performance from any President of either party.

I probably won't watch it. I'd rather be playing my guitar. Damn, I broke a string the other night - oh well, probably due for a whole new set anyway. Actually, I should probably do a little more research on co-ops.

What were we talking about? Oh yea, the president's speech thingy. Nope, too busy.

I'm sorry, did you say you broke your G string and so you can't watch the SOTU address this evening?

You see people, what this world is coming to?

No, actually it was my A string, which just totally sucks because.... HEY! You were talking about my undergarments! JHC, I told you those things in confidence.

Sorry to derail the thread, but that's how much a care about the address tonight.

Not a bad idea this drinking game. If he says "nookyuller" you have to chug.

Nope. He never bothers to really inform us of anything. It is always more of a pep talk and an advertisement for himself rather than a true summary of what our government is really doing and what it's plans our for real domestic issues we have which he will not mention.

Well .. I hate to break it to you, but if you're a citizen of the United States, then yes, he is YOUR president, much like Barbara Boxer and Diane Feinstein are YOUR Senators.

It's funny. I waver from feeling obligated to feeling utterly hopeless. Whatever he says will likely be used as another divisive tool and that's depressing as hell.

I never understood the "He's not my President" line. I know it's supposed to be a symbolic bit of drollery, but it just comes off as unrealistic. It's almost as if to say "When I don't like reality, I invent my own."

I'll read the transcript. I can't listen to the man because he makes me too angry. But it wouldn't be right to just take the analysts' word for what he said. I want to read it myself

Nope, I have disowned him, as I am close to doing with Barbara Boxer, and have done with Gray Davis and Al Gore. If you don't like what I said, too bad, but perhaps you would like it better if I said, I WILL NOT CLAIM HIM. Either way, I consider him worse than Nixon.
