Fall of the D.C. Democrats
By Jan Frel, AlterNet. Posted November 22, 2005. John Kerry and a host of other squeamish Dems who have publicly 'regretted' their Iraq votes are now standing in a political wilderness. "Kerry's Iraq plan ... lays out a comprehensive new strategy to complete the mission in Iraq and bring our troops home. Its goal is to undermine the insurgency by simultaneously pursing both a political settlement and the draw down of American forces linked to specific, responsible benchmarks -- beginning with the draw down of 20,000 troops after successful Iraqi elections in December.” -- from JohnKerry.com What's powerfully obvious after John Murtha's speech last Thursday is that John Kerry and a host of other D.C. Democrats who have publicly "regretted" their Iraq votes and made calls for incremental withdrawal since the 2004 election are now standing in a political wilderness. The political premium on being identified as "against the war" has moved down the field, requiring politicians to actually -- gasp! -- call for total withdrawal of U.S. troops from Iraq if they don't want to be like George Bush. http://www.alternet.org/story/28581/ Yeah, this is pretty cool. Stand with President Bush or be a traitor. Now, some Democrats are going to have a real problem between these two choices but that's life in Washington D.C. Democrats are basically bankrupt in the arena of ideas: More and higher taxes Less drilling and more protection for seals, otters and carribou Surrender in Iraq More rights for homosexuals and other sexual deviates Medicare for all. - This should balloon the deficit by a huge margin Bar funding for US military bases in Iraq - I think this idea just died Here comes the national slavery act! Pass legislation requiring a one (or two)-year national service commitment which includes non-military service options and provides those completing it with greater financial assistance for postsecondary education and job training. Kiss yer ass goodby because you belong to the state! Block proposals that would undermine Social Security. Just charge more Help ensure no working family lives below the poverty line by expanding the negative income tax. Yeeehaaaw! A 365 day paid vacation for life! Yup, I can see folks just galloping to the polls in order to elects Demos for these items. Oh yeah. |
