But this isn't the first time he did this sort of things with those who have been loyal to him. Why is it such a big deal now to people who never really cared before?

IF Miers does not withdraw of her "own" accord (Bush certainly isn't going to "announce" that he asked her to withdraw) she'll be confirmed.

Bad choice of words, I should think. The only "Republican Guards" in history have all been handmaids to dictators...
