Uno Restaurant Holdings Corp, formerly known as Pizzeria Uno, has filed for Chapter 11 Bankruptccy protection on yesterday, January 20, 2010.

As you might already know, the pizza restauant chain, aka Chicago Grill, had originally first opened its doors for business at a then single eatery in the River North neighborhood of Chicago, illinois in 1943.

I think that they possibly grew too fast. This is usually what happens to restaurant / store chains that expand too much too fast.

These guys were still in business? And what were they thinking turning into a Fridays clone instead of selling that awful "chicago" style pizza?

Well I remember the old restaurant on Rush St. and you had to wait a very long time for the pizza but it was FANTASTIC.

They just serve crap.

I'm not actually flipping head over heels for their deep-dish pizza myself. Too much unbrowned gooey dough inside!!

But their regular pizza isn't too bad.

They used to be better, but like most franchises, they did not have enough QC to ensure that their name stood for something no matetr where you went.

So confidence in them fell and they were in competition with less "premier" places like Little Ceasars, Pizza Hut and Dominoes.

Against them, it was all price, and you could not compete with that, even if your product was still better.

That is somewhat like Dunkin Donuts here on the East Coast.

When they made their own donuts on the premises of all their coffee shops, the donuts were fantastic.

Now that they are made through a commisary and are sent to every shop, at 01:30 every morning, they are pure crap!! They are not done inside!! And they sit there all damn day. That isn't fresh! I won't buy them any more.

I think you mean Wabash/Ohio. And yes, the original Pizzeria Uno and Due are still pretty good. But it's hard to expect good Chicago-style pizza when the company is located in MA and you're eating in some Middle Eastern mall.

When they made their own donuts on the premises of all their coffee shops, the donuts were fantastic. My mother started as a counter person at one of them. She had to make the donuts herself, and that is where she met my father.

She then had 3 kids, went back to school, got her masters and now teaches high school physics.... go fig!

I won't buy them any more. They suck now. Some are still good, but most are just outlets, distributorships. There is one I pass b y when I pick up Jr from day care. It is a corner shop that is probably only 10' deep by 15' wide (they probably have storage in back).

They are more concerned with expansion into other markets (like a tunafish salad bagel??!?) than just giving fresh doughnuts and coffee! :P
