NBC NEWS, BOSTON - The MBTA has once again come under some serious fire and controvery after having suffered another train crash on its Green Line Service in just under a year. A Green Line operator has reportedly admitted that he was text messaging his girlfriend just before the crash had occured. Shortly after that, he looked up and realised that it was too late to avoid a collision with the trolley in front of him, he said.
The train that he was driving had slammed into the back of a train just in front of him that had stopped there for a red light. It was just after this time that the accident had occured. The accident took place just past the Gov't Center stop on the way to Park Street Station. Scores of passengers were sent flying inside the trains. At least 100 of them were either treated at the scene and many others were sent to area hospitals. Most of the surrounding hospitals were put on elert, being told that they might be receiving injured passengers. The driver of the train that ran into the other one was the most seriously injured, suffering a broken wrist. If it is confimed that he was texting his girlfriend, he will lose his job. He's been on the job for only about 22 months. Trolley service on the Green Line between North Station and Park Street has been suspended until the NTSB makes it final conclusion on the crash. Last year in May, on or about the 27th or 28th, in Newton, a Riverside-bound trolley barreling on the tracks at about 38mph, had abroptly slammed into the rear of a train in front of it, killing the operator. Score of passengers were hurt in that one and service in that area was down for about a week. The MBTA and the Carman's Union has agreed to and adopted a no-nonsense policy ruling that no employees be allowed to even carry their cell phones while on the job. If caught using one while on duty, then that person will be fired. ![]() |
