Miss California: Gay marriage answer cost me Miss USA crown

Carrie Prejean, 21, probably knew she was in trouble when she acknowledged her opposition to same-sex marriages in response to a question from openly gay judge Perez Hilton, the celebrity blogger. "In my country, and in my family, I believe that a marriage should be between a man and a woman," Prejean replied. Later, she lost to Miss North Carolina. Photos: 2009 Miss USA pageant "It did cost me my crown," Prejean, the first runner-up, said of her response, on Monday's " Billy Bush Show." "I wouldn't have had it any other way. I said what I feel. I stated an opinion that was true to myself and that's all I can do." In an appearance Monday on MSNBC, Hilton said he was absolutely "shocked and incredibly frustrated and disappointed" with Prejean's stance. "That's not the kind of woman I want to be Miss USA," he said. "Miss USA should represent all Americans and, with her answer, she instantly alienated millions of gays and lesbians and their friends." Earlier, Hilton had said on his video blog he would have run onstage and ripped the tiara off Prejean's head had she won the title. And the blogger would not have been the only member of the Miss USA family to go apoplectic had Prejean advanced in the competition. Keith Lewis, executive director of California's Miss USA operations, said in a statement released to Hilton that "religious beliefs have no place in politics in the Miss CA family." Prejean Monday said she was raised in a way that you can never compromise your beliefs and your opinions for anything. "It is a very touchy subject and [Hilton] is a homosexual and I see where he was coming from and I see the audience would've wanted me to be more politically correct," she added. Prejean said she has received 2,000 friend requests on Facebook since the weekend controversy began unfolding. Prejean Monday said she was raised in a way that you can never compromise your beliefs and your opinions for anything. Does she know that that is the point? (And the irony in her statement?)
Ms. USA is one of the most degrading cattle-shows for pretty women out there. There is no male equivalent because people just don't care about a bunch of pretty boys on stage (to the same level as pretty women). All the stuff about talent is secondary. But the thing is, they have to be the perfect little princess. In order to do that, they have to PLEASE EVERYONE. They have to be vanilla (or mocha, but still just as sweet), be for "world peace" and be able to spell their own name w/o a TelePrompter. Her statement that she cannot compromise her opinions just shows how incredibly ignorant she is. If your opinion is later to be found baseless, then you KEEPING it only proves your lack of strength or intelligence (and definitely flexibility). It shows how SMALL a human you are. As for beliefs, that is a tricky one. But for some reason, I don't think Jesus ever won any beauty pageants. |

Oh c'mon.... give the girl a break: all she really had to say was that she feels the same way about gay marriage as President Obama does... I do not recall Obama stating his opposition to Gay Marriage, but asking him to take a stand on something lik ethat when he is trying to sell the country on the whole bailout thing is just dumb politics. You just don't mention Abortion when talking about the Second Amendment. Pretty simple (I wish more people knew that! ![]() |

Question for the studio audience:
- Why is it cool to like Obama who is against gay marriage but be against this 18 yr. old girl who is against gay marriage? - Obviously this girl did not get Perez Hilton's vote because she is against gay marriage... but do you think he voted for Obama who is against gay marriage or not? |

Because maybe they thought that there are more things in life (especially for a Presuident to be concerned with) than Gay Marriage?
Not saying it is not important, but still. Comparing Miss America to the President on Job Requirements is a little weird. BTW, saw a bit on the Colbert Report by this one pastor that pretty much summed it up the way I have been calling for years. Government should not be attached to Religion in any way. Marriage is a religious title. Now wait, before you start yelling. Civil unions are all the government should be concerned with. Who is your partner that cares for you, that is attached to you financially, can visit you in the hospital (etc etc). This should be like any other license and not require a priest to approve it. ALL the civic rights conferred currently by the declaration of marriage should be recognised. But calling it "marriage" is a social and religious issue. Changing the law so that people have the same rights is what Government should be about. Changing peoples opinions should not be. If you want to be in a legally binding union, go to city hall and get your license. If you want to get "Married" go to CHURCH and do it there (and that goes to ALL the people who get married at a church but never go.) BTW, "Marriage" would have NO legal rights what-so-ever w/o a civil union license. It is only a union in the eyes of God until you pay your fee and sign on the dotted line. |
