The BBC reported a few days ago that:
"UK 'faces big defence decision'" The article has been removed so I changed the link to another relevant article. In a keynote defence lecture Mr Blair argued that there were two types of nations: "Those who do war fighting and peacekeeping and those who have, effectively, except in the most exceptional circumstances, retreated to the peacekeeping alone." Retreated to peacekeeping? No kidding. But it's not the first time. Chamberlain 1939, anyone? Give Czechoslovakia to the Nazis, or fight? Full article here: http://www.guardian.co.uk/military/s...988945,00.html Excellent Martin Rowson cartoon here: http://www.guardian.co.uk/cartoons/m...990706,00.html Very interesting times ahead for England. This on the other hand - seems plain whacky: Britain and France talked about a "union" in the 1950s, even discussing the possibility of the Queen becoming the French head of state, it was reported today. http://www.guardian.co.uk/uk_news/st...990795,00.html |
