He rides a motorcycle and he's all about the troops. He is also black. *cough *cough
You forgot to mention he's also black.

If he ran for president, he would have my vote. But it won't happen. The Republicans would never support a centrist. If you're not a far right wing Social Conservative, you're a liberal sympathizer. Powell would have to run as a Democrat.
And what makes Romney a far right wing candidate?

He's leaning there with his positions towards same-sex marriage and foreign policy discussions of any variety. But he's still no Santorum.

I have to disagree with that statement. Unless, by modern, you mean post-2008; where Republicans got psychotic because Obama is in office.
That's precisely what I meant.

Nixon was the first conservative Republican, however, he still bore some relevance to the Republicans who preceded him; as did Ford.
Nixon was not a conservative by the standards of that time or this one. Nixon was pro-labor, pro-union, pro-environment, and a Keynesian. He was driven by two motivators; power and solutions. Neither of those was ideology, however. Ford was driven by the latter, as well.

Is this a bad time to say that I intentionally don't vote?

So... besides being black, what would make him a viable candidate?
Are you talking about West, or our current President during his 1st campaign?

It would have been a waste. 2008 should have been a year that the GOP only put out the paper candidates. After Bush, the GOP wasn't going to keep the White House. It just wasn't going to happen.

The best GOP candidates; i.e., McCain and Huckabee, are gone in 2012. They're the last of the pre-Tea Party Republicans.
For once, I completely agree with you. There was no way Obama was going to lose in '08.

I personally think the Republicans are screwed when it comes to having a black GOP candidate. If they don't have any black candidates, they are going to be accused of being a bunch of white racist elitists. If they do have a black candidate, it's only going to be because they are trying to show they aren't a bunch of white racist elitists. You gotta feel bad for any black GOP hopefuls.

Oh God, a worse idea is to get me started on Santorum, at least as a professed liberal he purportedly represents none of your personal values, supposedly he's supposed to correspond to a few of mine, that's what makes it that much worse!

Romney is to conservatism what playdo is to carpentry.

In my perfect world, you'd have a presidential debate with Obama on one side and Michael Steele on the other side. It'd be hilarious to have the president using all of these loft words and complex ideas, while Michael Steele relied on an ebonics translator to convey his message. Pure gold...think I'll petition America's Party.

Indeed, the uneasy alliance between the more rational minded fiscal Conservatives and the often outrageous Social Cons is a strange one indeed!

I think a lot of the dissatisfaction with the GOP comes from people sick of seeing idiots like Santorum in the spotlight all the time. Its a similar problem to the Dems, the idiots whore all the attention (and $$$) to themselves.

Awesome! I still believe the Colin Powell would have made a great, first "black" President.
Don't hold your breath. He is a Moderate Republican who backs Obama precisely because there is no room in the Republican Party for Moderates.

I really don't get the social cons that try to say they are fiscally conservative as well. Santorum was just funny. He said he was fiscally conservative because to counter title X (sex ed in school spending), he made title XX (abstinece(sp) ed in school spending). Its like "Oh, you are fiscally conservative cause you doubled the uncostitutional spending that you disliked so much. That makes it better".

Reminds me of a movie quote from Contact. "Why spend money on one toy when you can get 2 for twice the price?"0

Yeah, I am sure not all dems are as bad as Charlie Rangle, Pelosi, Reed, Obama, Shultz, Finestein, etc, but they are the biggest loud mouths that get news coverage all the time like Santorum.
